Gray Santolina is a semi-evergreen shrub prized for its silvery-gray, finely textured foliage and cheerful yellow button-like flowers. Though not native to North America, it thrives in well-drained soils and full sun, making it an excellent choice for xeriscape gardens and naturalized landscapes that benefit from drought tolerance.
This Mediterranean native attracts pollinators and beneficial insects while requiring minimal water once established, reducing maintenance demands. The aromatic foliage deters some pests, supporting a balanced garden ecosystem. Gardeners value it for year-round visual interest, drought resilience, and its ability to anchor mixed borders or ground-level plantings.
Historically, Santolina has been used in traditional medicine and dried arrangements, while the dried flowers remain popular in crafts and aromatics. Plant in full sun with excellent drainage for best results—it adapts well to poor or rocky soils where other plants struggle.
