Pride of Barbados is a tropical flowering shrub prized for its striking orange and red blooms with red-tipped stamens. While not native to North America, this ornamental plant thrives in warm climates and adds dramatic color to garden landscapes.
This plant prefers full sun to partial shade, requiring at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily for optimal flowering. It's moderately drought-tolerant once established, making it suitable for water-conscious gardens.
In the garden, Pride of Barbados serves as an excellent focal point or screening plant, attracting pollinators like bees and butterflies. Its lush foliage provides shelter for beneficial insects and small wildlife, supporting local ecosystems.
Historically, various parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine and culinary applications in tropical regions. The seeds have been used as a seasoning spice, and the plant holds cultural significance in Caribbean and tropical gardens where it thrives as a reliable ornamental.
