Rivina humilis
Also known as Pigeonberry, Rouge Plant, Baby-peppers, Bloodberry
Pigeonberry is a perennial herb that reaches about 1 foot tall, happily growing beneath trees and shrubs. Its delicate flowers, about 1/4 inch across, bloom in lovely shades of white to pink, adorning the last 2-3 inches of the stems. You’ll find numerous, juicy red fruits that are almost translucent, typically appearing on the lower part of the stem while the upper section remains in bloom. These delightful fruits are a favorite treat for many types of birds! The leaves are gracefully wavy, measuring 1-3 inches in length.
When Pigeonberry blooms in pale pink and showcases its vibrant scarlet fruit at the same time, it truly captures the eye. This lovely plant thrives in light shade and enjoys moist, well-drained soil. With a little extra water during the summer, it can stay lively and vibrant.
