Paw Paw

Asmina triloba, commonly known as Pawpaw, Custard apple, and Wild banana is a native of East Texas. It can make a good understory tree as it grows as a small short-trunked tree or a multi-stemmed shrub of 10-40'. It has thick tropical-like oblong leaves that are deciduous and turn a yellow-green color in the fall. It blooms in the spring with beautiful six-petaled deeply colored reddish-purple flowers. It produces an edible fruits that can be ripened off the tree, though can cause skin irritation and stomach upset in some. It attracts pollinator like butterflies and birds.
